Compounding Drugs
What Is Compounding?
Compounded or custom-blended medications have been available for centuries. It wasn't until the 1900's that manufactured medications became available. Today, most patients use manufactured, "one-size-fits-all" medications, which we know works great for most people. However, each person has their own specific medical needs and many times compounded medications will meet those needs. If a medication is available orally, maybe we are able to compound a topical form of the same drug. If a medication is no longer available commercially, maybe we can compound it for you. By preparing an individual dosage form for customers and their specific needs, compounding medications will help Lakeview Pharmacy provide a better and much needed service to you, our customers.
How Do I Get Compounded Drugs and how long Will It Take To Make?
It is against Federal Laws to dispense prescription drugs without a valid Doctor's prescription, this includes compounded drugs. Prior to your pharmacy visit, obtain a valid prescription from your Doctor. Since this medication is made specifically for you, we need time to formulate and prepare your medication. Depending upon the complexity, all compounded medications should take between 24 and 72 hours to complete. Typically insurance plans may not cover the cost of compounded medications and we will not bill your insurance company. If you like, we will provide you with insurance re-imbursement forms should your insurance cover the medication.
Here's One Type of Compounded Drug
In our compounding area, we prepare customized medications specific to each cutomer's needs. One of our compounding medications is ketoprofen cream. It has shown to be effective for the treatment of athritis and other chronic pain conditions that would normally be treated with ibuprofen or other pain medications. This cream is more effective in treating pain because it is absorbed through the skin more efficiently without upsetting the digestive system. The cream goes directly to the site of pain to avoid other side effects.
